Why Children Are More Vulnerable to Mold Exposure

Research and clinical experience consistently show that children exposed to indoor mold environments report higher rates of respiratory symptoms including coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath, nasal congestion and chronic runny noses, eye and skin irritation, increased frequency and severity of asthma attacks in children with existing asthma, and new onset of asthma-like symptoms in children who previously had no respiratory issues. Children who cannot articulate environmental complaints may simply seem persistently unwell or unusually fatigued without a clear cause.

Parents should pay attention to whether respiratory or allergy symptoms in their children improve during school days away from home, on vacations, or when staying with relatives and worsen upon return home. This pattern of improvement away from the home environment is one of the clearest indicators that the indoor air quality of the home should be evaluated professionally.

School and Daycare Environments

Mold risk for children extends beyond the home to school and daycare environments. Many South Florida schools and childcare facilities occupy older buildings with aging HVAC systems, flat roofs, and a long history of water damage.
