Understanding Mold Spore Counts
When a licensed mold inspector collects air samples, the laboratory reports results in spores per cubic meter of air, broken down by mold genus. The most commonly detected genera in South Florida include Cladosporium, Aspergillus/Penicillium, Alternaria, Basidiospores, and others. Each genus has different characteristics and different implications for indoor air quality.
There is no single universal standard for what constitutes a dangerous indoor spore level. Federal agencies and professional organizations have not established enforceable numeric limits for indoor mold. However, professional interpretation uses established reference ranges and comparison against outdoor control samples to assess whether indoor conditions are normal or elevated.
How Results Are Interpreted
The primary comparison in any air quality report is indoor sample counts versus the outdoor control sample collected at the same time. The outdoor sample establishes the natural background level of spores present in the local environment on that day. Indoor levels should generally be at or below outdoor levels for most genera. When indoor counts significantly exceed outdoor counts, this suggests an indoor source contributing additional spores to the air.
The ratio of indoor to outdoor counts, combined with the genera involved, provides the professional interpretation basis. An indoor Cladosporium count five times higher than outdoor is concerning but may reflect garden debris near a door. An indoor Stachybotrys count when outdoor levels are zero strongly indicates active colonization of a persistently wet material inside the building.
Genera Associated With Serious Indoor Moisture Problems
Certain mold genera, when elevated indoors relative to outdoors, are more strongly associated with significant moisture problems and potentially more serious health concerns:
- Stachybotrys: Associated with chronically wet cellulose materials; presence indoors is always significant
- Chaetomium: Found on water-damaged drywall and paper products
- Aspergillus/Penicillium: Extremely common indoors; elevated levels can indicate widespread colonization
- Ulocladium: Associated with water-damaged building materials

Health effects from mold spore exposure depend on the genus and quantity of spores, the duration of exposure, and the individual's sensitivity.
