Cladosporium

Cladosporium is one of the most common mold genera identified in both indoor and outdoor air samples worldwide. What Does Cladosporium Look Like?

Cladosporium colonies appear olive-green, brown, or blackish-brown with a velvety or powdery texture. They often grow in irregular, spreading patterns on surfaces. Under a microscope, Cladosporium produces characteristic branching chains of conidia (spores) on dark-colored conidiophores. Spores are easily airborne and travel long distances.

Where Does Cladosporium Grow?

Found outdoors on dead plant material, soil, and organic debris. Indoors, Cladosporium grows on damp windowsills, bathroom tile grout, carpet, fabric, air conditioning coils, and any surface with recurring condensation. In South Florida, it is extremely common due to the high outdoor ambient spore counts and frequent indoor humidity issues.

Health Risks of Cladosporium Exposure

For most people, Cladosporium causes no symptoms at normal outdoor levels. Elevated indoor concentrations can trigger allergic reactions including sneezing, coughing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and skin irritation. People with asthma may experience worsening symptoms. Cladosporium does not typically produce dangerous mycotoxins, but its high spore production can significantly degrade indoor air quality.

How to Prevent Cladosporium in Your Home

Keep windows closed during high outdoor pollen and spore seasons. Use HEPA air filters in HVAC systems. Reduce indoor humidity below 60% with dehumidifiers. Clean windowsills, bathroom grout, and HVAC components regularly. Address any condensation on walls or windows promptly.
